Erin pours the samples!

For the fifth year in a row, John Reynolds of Brew Your Own Beer and Brendan Goggin of The Oakmont National Pub join me in hosting the “Oakmont Cup” home brewers contest. We started this in 2010 for Philly Beer Week – and had no idea it would grow to be this big an event. Last year we had over 75 tasters trying all the great home brews!

John selects the brewers and donates ingredients, I select the theme and help promote and Brendan hosts the event at his Pub in Havertown. A good time is had by all every year.

In 2010 we challenged the brewers with the theme of IPA – and Elliott Vansomeron won convincingly with his hop bomb. In 2011 we chose the theme of “Wheat” and Christa Taylor (usually among the top three finishers every year) won her first cup. That year it was blisteringly hot, and the AC was weak, it was a thirsty crowd indeed.

The next year we went “Belgian” and let the brewers imaginations run wild – to our benefit. Matt Pieters won the cup in a very close competition. Last year, 2013, focused on the “Porter” style, and Michael Kinsley took the cup in another close contest. This was our first event outside, we were glad to have a tent to shield us from the thunderstorms.

What will happen at Oakmont Cup V? Will we have our first repeat winner?

For 2014 we are adding more value to the attendees, as well as trying to make the whole event more controlled but still fun for all. This year we will be giving away commemorative pint glasses, a voucher for a free beer at the Oakmont Pub as well as door prizes from the Oakmont and Brew Your Own Beer. We will also be using a ticketing system to ensure everyone gets to sample every beer. There will be a fee this year to cover some of the costs – it’s $7.50.

Please register now at http://oakmontpub.com/brewers and join us for the fun! Drink local, enjoy local!
