Looking for some fresh craft beer before the York Revolution minor league baseball game? Or just looking for a cool place to hang out in the area, with craft beer in mind. If so, welcome your Liquid Hero!
Liquid Hero was established in 2010 by some very avid home brewers (friends Matt, Hoke and Josh) – brewing out of their garage for several years before establishing Liquid Hero Brewing. Co-Owner and brewer Matt DePrato is proud to say that they got the idea for both the company and it’s name one night watching an episode of the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels” about brewing beer — while quaffing a few with their friends.
These guys have a hand made electric 4 bbl brewhouse, that while not “efficient” it works for them – and the result is some pretty nice ale (and an occasional lager). Their Amber Ale (“American Hero”) is their “flagship” but a nice hoppy “Irregardless IPA” (6.5 abv) is right there too. You can get these beers in cans, thanks to a periodic visit from a portable canning company. You aren’t likely to see any Belgian style ales though “We don’t really like them that much” Matt explained.
At LHB they care about making flavorful beer for most tastes, as true to his homebrewer roots, Co owner and brewer Josh is very willing and excited to create new recipes. When I was at their Tap Room on North St (across from Santander Stadium) there were such beers as: White Rose Lager, Irregardless IPA, Imperial Stout, and “Schweet Ale” (a 5.2 abv strawberry wheat ale). The latter is a considered a “gateway beer” and a favorite of the ladies who come to the tap room, and it’s now available in cans as well. “I was surprised how many 22 and 23 year olds we get in here drinking our beer – when I was that old I wasn’t interested in good beer – and I certainly couldn’t pay for it”.
Matt shared with me that Liquid Hero is now dreaming about a larger brewhouse, as their electric 4bbl workhorse is running at two to three batches every week. They are also working with their distributor to get more Liquid Hero out on the market – which is proving to be a challenge. For now, you’d night just have to “schwing” down to York to be sure you get yours.
