Since opening in 1988 they have grown into an award winning brewery – including medals at the GABF, World Beer Championships and International Beer Festival. When I was there in late August of this year they had a mind blowing eight beers on tap (and cask) – including standards “Mick’s Smoked Stout”, “Bombay Grab IPA” and “Burly Irish Ale” – the latter being a fine session beer with some real taste.
If you happen to be in Burlington Vermont, don’t pass up a visit to the Vermont Pub and Brewery on 144 College Street. Early in my formative beer years I happened on this place, but scarcely understood how really unusually great it was at the time. Then I thought all college towns had great brew pubs with a wide selection of quality beers and good food. As time has passed I have learned that the VPB was and is truly exceptional.
I was greatly impressed with the “Ambergris” an inventive wiezen with additions of ginseng, sandalwood and sage flowers. But it really was really good – not just a novelty. The large outside seating area let us enjoy the weather along with the great beer. What could be better than that?
