Philly Beer Week – Oakmont IPA Homebrew Event Rocks

Happy Tasters

Lucky Oakmont Pub Patrons - Judging Great Beer

It was a great night with really great  fresh IPA brews at the Oakmont National Pub in Havertown to start out Philly Beer Week 2010 on Tuesday June 8th. Ten local homebrewers brewed a special IPA for the evening’s competition for the coveted Oakmont Cup (OK, it’s the first year, but it’s still coveted!). Patrons and brewers alike sampled the various beers – with over 31 beer appreciators casting ballots with their assessment of the aroma, look and taste of each beer. “Not a bad beer in the bunch” was a comment from the manager of the Oakmont Pub – Brendan Goggin. John Reynolds, owner of Brew Your Own Beer of Havertown, beaming with pride (as he facilitated the contest, and provided free hops to the brewers) agreed with Brendan’s assessment.

Voting for the Oakmont Cup

Judging Beer - A serious business!

In an unexpectedly close vote – third place for 2010 was awarded to Steve McManus, runner up was John Reagan and this year it was Elliott Vansomeron who took home the cup. While these three were selected by the voters this year, there were no losers – as in the course of two hours over 300 beers samples of the brewers craft were shared by a grateful and appreciative crowd. Thanks to John of Brew Your Own Beer, Brendan of the Oakmont National Pub and all the participating home brewers including Joe Spitaleri, Brian Palmer, Todd Delevan, Steve DeSantis, Krista Taylor, Anthony Addeo and Ralph Geslao – great work by you all. (And thanks to Garrett for pouring all 300!)

Brendan vowed that this would be an annual event, so lets keep brewing and appreciating the wonders of great fresh beer in Havertown. Maybe next year the Flyers will also bring a cup home for Philly!
